Services - Fillings
Murphy’s Landing Family Dental offers tooth colored fillings. This is used when a cavity has extended near or into the dentin and needs to be removed from the tooth. You have an enamel layer outside the tooth, then a dentin (more porous) layer, then the nerve in the crown of a tooth. A cavity is an infectious disease process. The cariogenic or cavity causing bacteria exist in most people’s oral cavities or mouths. When these bacteria exist and carbohydrates or sugar exist the bacteria process the sugar and release acid, which causes the tooth breakdown. This process needs to be stopped or addressed in a timely manner to prevent the spread of the cavity. The bacterium is not removed, so once you have this bacterium you have a propensity for cavities.
When all compromised tooth structure is removed an acrylic or glass ionomer filling is used to fill in the void in the tooth. This leaves margins or areas where tooth meets filling material. These areas are never as smooth as natural tooth structure or enamel. After a few fillings the dentist may recommend a prescribed home fluoride routine along with in office fluoride application.
